The title of this post in long form is the New York State Teacher’s Certification Examination – Content Specialty Test – Social Studies: a four hour, mind-boggling exam that Ontario teachers taking their certification New York need to pass before becoming certified in Ontario.
A very strange experience writing this test! There were 90 multiple choice and one essay question. The essay question was to be 150-300 words long (I may have went over the 300 and I wonder what the repercussions of that might be). Failing that question means failing the entire exam, regardless of the score on multiple choice.
The following are links to practice tests and useful resources:
NYSEDRegents.gov – Go through the practice exams. Many of the questions in the practice exams appeared on the CST test.
California Teacher Certification Tests – Go through the practice questions. Similar questions, reworded, appeared on NYSTCE exams.

Unfortunately, I did not have any luck with passing the test after purchasing Wynne book. I passed on the 4th try by writing down the previous questions and using them as basis for my studying for future tests. Only a small portion of the questions in the book appeared reworded in the actual exam. You might consider purchasing it for mock test purposes. Be mindful of the fact that there are 1000s of resources online that are offered for free.
Here are 3 criteria you should always look for in a study guide for your NYSTCE Social Studies test:
1. The guide must be written by writers who have painstakingly researched the topics and concepts needed to succeed on your NYSTCE Social Studies test.
2: The guide must be to-the-point, with no fluff to distract the test taker from the truly important information.
3: The guide must be guaranteed- if you don’t pass with flying colors, you get your money back- no questions asked.
How to Pass the NYSTCE social studies test
As soon as you are done the test, write down the topics of each questions – as many as you remember.
